Jagannath Hall opens with the University of Dhaka

The first academic session of the University of Dhaka began on 1 July 1921. On the same day three residential halls — Jagannath Hall, Dhaka Hall and SM Hall — opened with the university, the first of their kind in the eastern part of undivided India.

The hall was named in recognition of Jagannath College, one of the two feeder colleges that supplied students to the new university, and after Jagannath Roy Chowdhury, father of Kishorilal Roy Chowdhury, zamindar of Baliati in Manikganj. Its first provost was Professor Naresh Chandra Sengupta; later provosts included Professor Satyendra Nath Bose, Professor Jnan Chandra Ghosh, Ramesh Chandra Majumdar, Dr. Govinda Chandra Dev and Professor Jyotirmoy Guhathakurta.
